Our famous recipe

Hjónabandssæla

One of the loveliest parts of your stay at Hótel Breiðdalsvík is our beloved Hjónabandssæla, a traditional Icelandic pastry, baked fresh in our kitchen with care and love, just like in the old days.

This cosy oatmeal cake with rhubarb jam takes its charming name, which means marital bliss, from the belief that a good marriage, like the cake, is made from simple ingredients that come together to create something warm, strong, and a little sweet and sour.

Hjónabandssæla, our recipe

Ingredients

  • 200 g rolled oats
  • 150 g flour
  • 200 g brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 200 g butter
  • 400 g rhubarb jam
Method

  1. Mix the oats, flour, sugar and baking soda. Add the melted butter and vanilla and knead into a dough.
  2. Press two thirds of the dough into a lined baking tin. Spread the rhubarb jam evenly on top, and crumble the rest of the dough over it.
  3. Bake at 180°C for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown.
  4. Serve warm with skyr or whipped cream.

This cake is baked fresh daily in our kitchen, ask our staff for a slice during your stay!
